During my time at Makerere University, I was actively involved with Muhunsa, a prestigious student organization dedicated to fostering excellence in human nutrition. Muhunsa provides a valuable platform for students to expand their knowledge, apply classroom learnings to real-world scenarios, and build connections with industry professionals as well as nutrition students of other tertiary institutions. Working alongside this exceptional team was an immensely rewarding experience. We undertook impactful outreach programs, reaching students and communities in Kampala at schools and health camps, as well as extending our reach to the Kiryandongo refugee settlements. Through these initiatives, we delivered vital nutrition education, provided career guidance, and instilled a passion for nutrition within the communities we served. I am incredibly proud of the accomplishments we achieved together at Muhunsa, and I have full confidence that the organization will continue to thrive and illuminate the field of human Nutrition.
Joining MUHUNSA wasn't just about textbooks. Sure, I learned the science of nutrition the intricate dance of vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients. But MUHUNSA went beyond. Through workshops and events, I honed my skills in: Client communication, Community outreach and Event planning MUHUNSA transformed me from a student of nutrition to someone who could empower others to make healthy choices. It was about the science, yes, but also the skill of bringing it to life.
A great nurturing I can say, I have received from MUHUNSA! As a former executive member, I have honed my organizational, communication, and leadership abilities, allowing me to effectively coordinate events, collaborate with teams, and participate project management. This has also expanded my understanding of the nutrition field, exposed me to networking opportunities, and instilled a sense of professionalism and community engagement. These experiences have empowered me to become a more confident, adaptable, and socially responsible individual, poised to make a positive impact in the nutrition sector..
During my three years at Makerere University pursuing my Bachelor's degree in Human Nutrition, I was honored to serve on the exceptional executive committee of MUHUNSA. Comprised of dedicated individuals, MUHUNSA tirelessly advocated for the nutrition agenda in Uganda, emphasizing research, community engagements, and nutrition education. As a member of the executive committee, I had the privilege of contributing to our mission of advancing the welfare and academic pursuits of students while passionately advocating for improved nutrition outcomes in our nation; Uganda.
MUHUNSA, A HOME AWAY FROM HOME! Joined Makerere University in 2022, confused and uncertain about my journey as a student of Human Nutrition and even thereafter as a Nutritionist/dietitian. However MUHUNSA, made the journey very much easier and more full filing especially when I became a more engaged member, served as the Public Relations Secretary for the association and as an Interview Editor for MUHUNSA's newsletter, The NutriConnect. Unprepared but highly optimistic I took on the role, learnt on the job, built my capacity in many different aspects especially public relations from public speaking to engaging fruitfully with stakeholders, members and partners, building connections while ensuring that mobilization and visibility strategies of the Association were met. This played a critical role in later being elected as Publicity secretary for the Nutrition Society of Uganda! With a highly supportive and hardworking team, was able to participate in different nutrition outreaches, camps and mentorship sessions from people in the field which played a critical role in giving me a comprehensive understanding of nutritional practice and understanding the profession much better. Conclusively, MUHUNSA has made my stay at Makerere University, pursing a degree in Human Nutrition more fruitful and worth it than I had ever imagined.
